THE IMPERFECT

The imperfect is another past tense. Unlike the passé composé, which describes completed actions, the imperfect is used to describe actions that haven’t been completed or are still in progress. It’s also used to make descriptions, to tell time, and to describe habits in the past.

The imperfect is very easy to conjugate! To form the imperfect:

1. Start with the “nous” form of the present indicative.

2. Take off the “-ons.”

3. Add the following endings:

Fortunately, there is only one irregular verb in the imperfect! It is “être.”
